Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been left out of their Europa League first-leg tie against Danish side FC Midtjylland on Thursday.

Full-back Matteo Darmian also misses out after dislocating his shoulder on Saturday against Sunderland.

Donald Love, who made his first-team debut in the loss against the Black Cats, is included in the squad.

Youngsters Regan Poole, Joe Riley and James Weir make the trip and could make their senior debuts for the Red Devils.

Rooney has scored seven goals in his last nine games but was missing from the flight to Scandinavia.

Manager Louis van Gaal is expected to explain Rooney's absence at a news conference later on Wednesday.

United enter the competition at the last-32 stage after finishing third in their Champions League group.

Travelling fans are planning to protest about the £71 they are being charged for a ticket to the game.
